Teacher Appreciation Week:

Today is the Friday of Teacher Appreciation Week.  I want to say thank you to all of our dedicated teachers who work hard every day to build powerful connections with our students.  Some students do not always seem to show appreciation for your efforts, but someday those efforts will show fruit.  Just knowing that fact should make you pause and consider the impact that you have on the community in which you live, the world that our students will create, and the future of our society.   Every day I meet wonderful kids who I am proud to call a neighbor.  Teachers are a huge part of that fact.  Here are some cute stories from Reader's Digest that outline the impact of teaching.

I recently asked a student where his homework was. He replied, “It’s still in my pencil.”

—Larry Timmons, Surprise, Arizona

On the last day of the year, my first graders gave me beautiful handwritten letters. As I read them aloud, my emotions got the better of me, and I started to choke up.

“I’m sorry,” I said. “I’m having a hard time reading.”

One of my students said, “Just sound it out.”

—Cindy Bugg, Clive, Iowa

When one girl had finished the English portion of the state exam, she removed her glasses and started the math questions.

“Why aren’t you wearing your glasses?” she was asked.

She responded, “My glasses are for reading, not math.”

Special Mother’s Day Story,

4-year-old Gavin, who has been blind his entire life, is learning to navigate his world.   On a bright sunny day in March, Gavin uses his walking stick for the first time to take one great independent step down off a curb.  The nervous boy searches for the slope of the cement while saying, "I can do it.  I can do it."  All the while you can hear his mom rooting him on.  "You can do it, baby - go ahead, you're safe."  The moment is small on the action, but oh so big on heart and courage.

Happy Mother’s Day and thanks to all of you who are just like this mother in that you encourage our students to take those small and big first steps in learning or life skills.

Have a great weekend,

Rob
