Partnership Educators, Driving to the annual family Easter Egg hunt that day seemed ridiculous. The wipers swooshing the rain off of the windshield as we traveled along the highway told of a canceled event to my wife and me. The kids were busy talking about the eggs found earlier in the house living room and speculating about the treasures that might be inside as we pulled into my brother and sister-in-law's driveway.

Partnership Educators, Ben’s nephew was sixty-five years old and living in London when he became interested in rare books. He was so interested that he invited a rare book dealer to his home. The gentleman brought with him many different types of books. Ben’s nephew glanced through the books looking at illustrations and small passages when he stopped cold. What attracted his attention was what was written in the margins of a pamphlet within one of the books. It was a handwritten message of someone very special. It was the client's own Uncle Ben. “You would have enjoyed him,” the client told the book dealer. “My Uncle was a poet and a dreamer. My Uncle Benjamin Franklin.”

Partnership Educators, Telling the story of any organization is really a tale about the heroes within it. These are everyday people who clean up campus, build supportive instruction, feed all who come to the window, lend a listening ear, or fill out the paperwork that keeps it all rolling along. A system such as ours is a mesh of interwoven pieces that come together to make a complex work of art or an orchestra in the pit as the actors work out the scene on stage. In any case, I am appreciative of how all of what each of us does fits together to make educating students happen.

Partnership Educators, There is certainly so much to pay attention to in this environment that we find ourselves in. We can certainly get overwhelmed just by trying to listen to all of the information swirling around us. Most people will try to control the overload by focusing on a few bits of information. We can also be susceptible to focusing so much on all the information that we lose the center on our purpose or just perspective on the entire narrative. I certainly have fallen into the narrow focus trap as we have moved from one thing to the next thing.

Partnership Educators, Today represents a moment in time when everyone can remember where they were on this date nineteen years ago. We are reminded of the memories of those who lost their lives in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania. Etched in our minds are the pictures of the heroic efforts of the rescue workers who rushed forward to saves the lives of the individuals caught in the tragedy of this act of terror. Our brave public servant comrades in our police and fire have always been there for us as citizens. Honoring those individuals who have served or continue to serve in these organizations as well as our military shouldn't have an end. Partnership Educators, My sons all played video games while growing up. Mario Bros was a staple at our house. The boys, who almost all are in the thirties now, still talk about some of the games they used to play and laugh about how long it took them to "beat the game" or "pass a level". It always fascinated me how they would fail over and over again until they made it, with great personal joy by the way. In comparison, my wife and I might start a level and fail a few times until we would give up. I am sure you have had similar experiences. Why would we do that? Truthfully we wouldn't always give up. Sometimes we would keep trying. Most times we would keep trying when we had an expert sitting by our side helping guide us. Who was our expert? Our sons. They certainly had the skill for some of these games at a very high level and could explain how to make it through. With the guide by our side, we felt that we could do it. We no longer saw the task as unachievable.

Partnership Educators, My wife and I have been known to frequent the driveways and garages of other locals in search of hidden gems within their wares. Investigating the tables and talking with the happy sellers is what brings the joy of the activity. I love to investigate the Barnes and Noble like discount books that are often in boxes or strewn in piles that invite the buyer to move the top books to find if there might be a prize underneath. Upon one such adventure, I unearthed a book that I had read to my sons. I was pleased to find, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. I started thinking about those moments of reading with my sons and a great sense of joy filled my heart with the fond memories of those intimate gentle times with my boys.
