Stories of Us - January 29, 2021

Partnership Educators,

The Power of a Promise.  Contemplate that statement.  We make commitments all the time.

My father was an average man who worked in warehouses for most of his life.  He wasn't particularly good looking, to my disappointment since I am the spitting image of him, nor was he a person who wrote books or ran marathons.  He was an average man living his life.  The truth is that if you would have ever met my father you most likely wouldn't have gone home and talked about him.  He was just a normal guy working and living every day.    Except maybe for one thing.   My father was a man of his word.  When he told us that he would be there, he showed up.  He was far from a perfect person but he did keep his promises.

It turns out that it doesn't matter what language you speak, or how much money you have, or what you believe, we all understand the power of making and keeping promises.  It is something core to human existence.   "I promise to make life worth living for my sister with Down's Syndrome every day of her life, and take care of her when my parents are no longer able to."  The promise made online publicly by a woman in Iowa.

Thanks to our educators for choosing to make the promise to teach our kids and help them learn about the power of empathy and compassion.  Thank you for committing to helping our students to learn how to communicate with others in a way that builds them up.    This is the lesson of promises.  The traits that we hold dear are connected to our stance to build those Portrait traits.  These are what people remember about us and those traits are what makes us powerful in life.

Update:
Vaccinations:
Attached you will find the plan for vaccinating those involved in education in Shasta County.  Both mass clinics and appointments will be offered to those in education. Each person can submit the survey linked on the flyer (and linked here) to share their preference. The Shasta County Public Health survey collects email addresses so that they can notify people when it is their day/time for the mass clinic or for scheduling an appointment.
Vaccines will be administered to those in education beginning with those who have medical conditions and then through the various age spans.
One of the challenges that Shasta County Public Health has had is the huge variance of vaccine doses received on a weekly basis. They've seen a low of only 100 doses available for the week to a high of well over 1,000. They only find out early in the week the number of vaccines they will have for the following week which has made long-range planning difficult. The hope is that there will be enough vaccine doses received so that educators will begin to be vaccinated in early February.

Testing:
As always you are encouraged to follow the recommendation of Shasta County Public Health (SCPH) and get a COVID test every three weeks or so.  It is not required but they are recommending it and so I didn't want to not pass along the information to you.   Below I have passed along the current information from SCPH around testing.  It should be completely free to you.
