Stories of Us - December 19, 2019

Partnership Educators,

Happy Holidays to everyone in the partnership.  I wish you a restful and joyous time with your friends and families.

Stories can be powerful because they take serious, confusing, and threatening subjects and make them clear and approachable.  Stories can be memorable, unlike so much of the information that bombards us today and is forgotten tomorrow.  They can stimulate thought, teach important lessons, and can motivate, young or old, to use those lessons.  In our modern, high-tech world, we can easily forget this simple yet profound truth.

The challenge of helping our students build their life stories is deeply rooted in the equity of the possible.  For some of our students, anything is possible and for others, none of it seems possible.   I take great pride in our district's commitment to building pathways to the possible for all of our kids.  Our willingness to take the action steps to make things happen is tremendous and I truly announce it from the rooftops to all that want to listen.

I have had the wonderful opportunity to watch many music performances these past few weeks across the partnership and I have to say, wow.  We have students from all walks of life learning and gaining confidence while performing for others.  Small groups of students taking it upon themselves to write an original piece of music, arrange to practice that piece with others and then ask to perform it live is inspiring.  This is what our music department does for kids.  Builds connections and offers the possibility to some that need the hope.  Students that are built up to act beyond their years.  These are stories others will tell for some time to come and stories these students will tell when they are old.  The story I told last week is just such a story about me that I still tell today about myself.

Be encouraged to take part in a few other opportunities for kids to build stories.
