Distance Learning Guidelines

Redding School District

Spanish Version

Parent Partners,

Education is a service to which our district is resolutely committed. It is not a place. To that end, we are shifting our education from the classroom with four walls to online when possible and packet support when needed. We are taking this strategic approach not because we think by doing so, we will stop an epidemic; we are simply trying to do our part to slow the spread of COVID-19. By transitioning from the classroom to online, we are also giving medical/public health officials and the community time to distance themselves in order to slow the spread of this virus.  We are in communication with all the necessary partners. Below you will get some details about how our Hybrid Model approach will be rolled out.

General Information: Hybrid Model (Digital and Print)

Distance Learning is students working at home either online or offline while the teacher assigns work and checks in digitally or with phone contact.   The teachers and students will likely interact using digital forms of communication such as video calls, google classrooms, emails, or phone calls. Please go to http://learnonline.reddingschools.net to sign the online consent form and get access to the learning packets for download if you choose.  We chose a Hybrid Model for our Distance Learning because not all of our families have access to technology.

Start - April 14, 2020

The first two weeks of assignments are posted on the Redding School District website at  http://learnonline.reddingschools.net/ New weekly assignments will be posted every Friday starting on April 24, 2020.  Teachers will be contacting students and families this week to finalize the schedule of learning.

Week 1: April 14 to April 17, 2020

  1. Hand out (or access online) the first 2 weeks of packets - See your child’s school schedule.

  2. Teachers will contact families to develop distance learning schedules.

Week 2:  April 20 to April 24, 2020

  1. Teacher arranged weekly schedules will be implemented.

  2. All teachers will have office hours for extra contact by email, phone, or online.

Schedules will continue until closure is over or the last day of instruction, June 4, 2020.

Attendance/Credit:

Attendance will be tracked using work completion per week.

  • For those able to access materials and learn with teachers online, those online connections, online discussion posts and the submitting of assignments online will count as attendance. Returning packets to school will not be required.

  • For those unable to use online processes, a weekly paper packet will be provided and returned to the school site to confirm weekly attendance.  Phone check-ins or other means will be used, by teachers, to connect with children while they complete the paper packets.

Grading:

No grades will be given during this time.  Students are held harmless and their current status cannot go down.  Instead, students will earn credit based on the learner communicating, contacting, and making connections with the teacher in order to learn.  It is our intention to support the students learning as best as the current circumstances will allow. Students with disabilities will continue to receive services and accommodations according to their IEP to the extent which is feasible.  Please connect with the student’s case carrier along with their general education teacher.

Credit/Incomplete will be awarded based on the connections for learning.

  • If a student was meeting minimum standards (C or higher) up to the point of closure, they will receive Credit if they do adequate work connections while in Distance Learning.  If they are unable to make connections for credit for the rest of this year then they will receive an Incomplete. Due to the nature of the current situation, after six weeks the Incomplete will change to a No Credit if the student cannot demonstrate adequate work completion.

  • If a student was below minimum standards (D or F) up to the point of closure, they will be given extra opportunities, by the teacher of each course, to improve that up to Credit status.  They must still complete the assignments during the Distance Learning time frame. If they are able to do the extra assignments for Credit and the current assignments for credit then they will receive a Credit.  If they do not bring their status up to minimum, then they will receive an Incomplete.  Due to the nature of the current situation, after six weeks the Incomplete will change to a No Credit if the student cannot demonstrate adequate work completion.

Earning Credit Status for courses on Report Card:

  1. Meeting Minimum Requirements before Closure + Adequate Work Connections during Distance Learning = Credit on report card

  2. Below Minimum Requirements before Closure + Adequate Work Connections during Distance Learning + Extra Make-up work = Credit on report card

Earning Incomplete/No Credit Status for courses on Report Card:

  1. Meeting Minimum Requirements before Closure + DOES NOT have Adequate Work Connections during Distance Learning = Incomplete/No Credit

  2. Below Minimum Requirements before Closure + DOES NOT have Adequate Work Connections during Distance Learning +/or NO Extra Make-up work = Incomplete/No Credit

  • “Adequate Work Connections” for “Credit” can come in the form of working online with a teacher, submitting work online, participating in discussions, or turning in a packets each week.  We will be flexible based on students' needs and family situations. Work will not be scored and graded but used to guide discussions with students. Physical packets will be collected for those that do not have access to online processes.

Report Cards:

Report cards will still be sent home at the end of the year.  More directions will be given as we get closer to the reporting period.  An Incomplete or No Credit does not exclude a student from matriculating to the next grade.

Sincerely and stay safe,

Robert Adams, Superintendent
